I’ve been trying to get my kids to sweep, but they always get confused when I tell them to put their hands into the water. They don’t know what to do. I do some quick mental calculations to help them get it right. It’s not a lot of fun, but it’s also a great way to teach kids responsibility.
If you’re not sure if your kids know what to do, do this experiment. Put a piece of paper in the middle of a clear area of the kitchen floor and ask them to pick up and hold it there. Now ask them to hold the paper in their hands and tell you what they think is up. The more you ask them to hold the paper, the more they learn.
One of the best and most effective ways to teach kids responsibility and accountability is to have them do something that’s hard or dangerous. One of my favorite toys as a kid was a big cardboard box that you cut open to see all the treasures inside. When I was about five or six I used to have to work really hard to get the box apart so I could open it up and take out all the contents.

While this one is a bit more difficult than the other two, it’s still a lot of fun to do. It’s like putting a puzzle together. There are a couple of things you have to do, but once you’ve done those, it will be easy to figure out what’s in the box.
